TYPES OF GRIEF SUPPORT

Whether you have lost a spouse, life partner, close friend, parent, child, grandparent or guardian, we can help. Gilchrist Grief Services offers a wide range of resources, which are open to our own bereaved clients or anyone in the community who has lost a loved one, including:

Grief counseling

Grief counseling is available on a time-limited basis for those who prefer an individual approach to dealing with the often overwhelming feelings and physical responses associated with a loss. This is offered at no charge to those who have lost a loved one through Gilchrist Hospice Care and on a sliding scale to members of the community at large. Our Grief Counselors are all Master's prepared in counseling. They are additionally recognized by the Association for Death Education and Counseling for competence in bereavement and in end-of-life care.

Please call 443.849.8251 or email to schedule a counseling session.

Grief support groups

These groups encourage mutual support and understanding by providing an environment where participants can discuss topics related to grief and explore their feelings and how they are coping. As it can be difficult to hear other people's stories when one is newly grieving, we encourage you to consider first participating in individual counseling and to wait a few months after your loss to participate in a support group.

Most support groups meet for six sessions and are offered both during the day and evenings.

Annual Wellness day

This one-day seminar is held in the fall. It is designed to give attendees an opportunity to learn new coping skills, to better understand their feelings, and to come away with a renewed sense of hope for the future. This seminar includes a keynote speaker, workshops and an endnote speaker. More information.

Steps of hope & Lights of hope

Steps of Hope (occurs in Baltimore County) and Lights of Hope (occurs in Howard County) are held throughout the year to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have died. To view dates of upcoming services, view our calendar.

CHILD LIFE SERVICES

Our child life specialist serves as part playmate, part teacher and part emotional outlet for young children grieving the loss of a loved one. The child life specialist does not offer traditional counseling but rather focuses on helping children work through their anxiety, fears and questions through activity and play. She also works with families to create lasting memories of their children through crafts (hand molds, footprints, pillows, etc.) and other activities. More information.
