Gilchrist Palliative Care began as an inpatient program at Greater Baltimore Medical Center in 2007 and was designed to offer patients with serious illnesses care that would address not only their physical needs, but their emotional and social ones too, with a goal to improve their quality of life. Although similar to hospice, it is different in one distinct way: palliative patients need not be “terminally-ill,” defined as having six months or less to live.

Due to the success of the program, Gilchrist Palliative Care has been expanded and is now offered at GBMC, for both inpatient and outpaitent care at the Cancer Center, and at Howard County General Hospital for inpatient services. The program  will soon be offered at several area post-acute skilled care facilities through partnerships with Genesis HealthCare and Lorien Health Systems.
